TraumaSmart Certification
What it means, and why it matters
TraumaSmart Certification is a way for organisations to demonstrate a clear and considered commitment to trauma-informed practice. It signals to staff, the people you support, and the wider community that care, safety and understanding are taken seriously within your setting.
Certification reflects that staff have taken part in structured, evidence-based learning and have developed a shared understanding of trauma and its impact. It also provides a clear way to recognise professional development, supporting organisations to evidence learning and reflect consistency across teams.
Both TraumaSmart and TraumaSmart+ include CPD-accredited certification, meaning participants are able to evidence their learning formally. For organisations, this supports credibility and demonstrates a longer-term intention to embed trauma-informed approaches into everyday practice, rather than treating training as a one-off exercise.
TraumaSmart Certification isn’t about ticking a box. It’s about making visible the values that guide how people are supported and how staff are expected to respond when work feels demanding.
What CPD Accreditation Means?
CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development. It refers to the learning professionals undertake to develop their knowledge and skills over the course of their career.
CPD-accredited training has been assessed against recognised standards for quality, structure and relevance. It provides reassurance that learning is purposeful, well-designed and appropriate for professional development.
For participants, CPD accreditation means their learning is formally recognised and can be recorded within CPD portfolios, appraisals or professional records. For organisations, it offers external validation that training meets established standards and has measurable value.
What TraumaSmart Certification Gives You
For Individuals
All participants who complete TraumaSmart or TraumaSmart+ receive a CPD TraumaSmart Certificate. This confirms that they have completed accredited trauma-informed learning and can evidence their professional development.
For many learners, this certificate provides reassurance that the learning they’ve undertaken is recognised and meaningful, and supports confidence in applying trauma-informed principles in practice.
TraumaSmart+ Setting Certification
Organisations that complete the TraumaSmart+ programme receive recognition as a TraumaSmart+ Setting. This reflects a sustained commitment to embedding trauma-informed thinking across the organisation, rather than limiting it to individual roles.
TraumaSmart+ Setting recognition indicates that learning has been supported over time, that practice is being considered across teams, and that trauma-informed approaches are shaping how decisions are made and how people are supported.
This recognition is valid for two years, with the option to renew through additional training or follow-up support. For families, partners, inspectors and stakeholders, it provides visible reassurance that trauma-informed practice is part of how the organisation operates day to day.
