trauma-informed
training programme
Helping organisations create environments where people feel safer, better understood and more consistently supported.
“This is trauma training that actually makes sense!”
Why TraumaSmart Exists
Every day, people across education, care, health and community settings support others who have experienced trauma. Many staff want to respond well, but aren’t always sure how to do that safely or consistently, especially when situations feel pressured.
TraumaSmart was created because this gap kept appearing.
There has long been a need for trauma-informed training that is clear, accessible and practical. Training that helps people understand trauma, the brain, relationships and behaviour in ways that feel usable rather than theoretical.
What we heard again and again was simple.
- People wanted something practical.
- They wanted something that made sense.
- They wanted everyone working from the same understanding.
TraumaSmart was designed to meet that need by translating complex ideas into everyday practice.
What is TraumaSmart?
TraumaSmart is heard LEARNING’s core trauma-informed training programme. It offers a clear, practical foundation for understanding trauma and responding more thoughtfully in day-to-day work.
The programme is CPD-accredited and grounded in attachment-focused, evidence-based understanding. Rather than focusing on labels or models, the emphasis is on helping people make sense of what they see and respond more confidently.
TraumaSmart supports staff to understand how the brain develops and how trauma can affect that process. It explores how stress, trauma and early experiences influence behaviour, relationships and emotional wellbeing. Attention is also given to attachment, safety and consistency, and how these support regulation and learning over time.
Everything is explained in plain language and connected to real situations, so learning feels relevant rather than abstract.
A Bespoke Approach
TraumaSmart is never delivered as a standard package.
Before training takes place, we spend time understanding your setting, the roles involved and the challenges you’re working with. This shapes how the session is delivered and which examples are explored.
The aim is always the same. Training that feels easy to understand, grounded in reality, and relevant to the situations your team actually faces.
If you’d like to talk through whether TraumaSmart could support your organisation, we’re happy to have an open conversation about what you need.
The TraumaSmart Approach
TraumaSmart is centred on people. Both the people doing the work, and the people being supported.
The training focuses on helping staff feel clearer and more confident in their responses, while supporting environments where people feel safer and more respected. Rather than telling people what to do, the emphasis is on understanding why certain approaches help and how consistency supports better outcomes.
This understanding makes it easier for teams to respond in similar ways, even when situations feel complex or emotionally charged.
Why TraumaSmart Matters
Trauma doesn’t simply disappear with time. Its effects can shape behaviour, relationships and emotional responses long after the original experiences have occurred.
When teams don’t share an understanding of trauma, responses can become inconsistent. Staff may feel unsure how to respond, overwhelmed by behaviour, or disconnected from one another when situations are demanding.
TraumaSmart supports teams to develop a shared language and clearer way of thinking. This helps responses feel steadier, reduces uncertainty, and supports practical change that can be maintained over time.
For many organisations, this marks the beginning of a wider shift in culture, rather than a one-off training day.
